What Does It Mean to Trust in God?
This post answers the question, "What does it mean to trust in God" and provides practical ways to strengthen your Trust in God along with the benefits of trusting in God.
Has someone told you that you just need to trust in God? Have you ever thought, “What does it mean to trust in God?” You can’t even imagine how trusting God will help when you can’t see past the edges of the pit you’re in. Your problems keep piling up, and the situation looks bleaker and bleaker. You might feel like you’re barely hanging on, and your hands are getting sweaty.
I know the feeling. I’ve been there. At the same time, I know that trusting in God is the solution. I’ve experienced that, too. So, in this post, I’ll answer the question, “What does it mean to trust in God?” Also, you’ll discover some practical ways to trust in God along with the benefits of trusting in God.
To start off, let’s take a look at what the Bible says about trusting God. Since we’re talking about trusting God, it makes sense to see what His Word says about it.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths” (English Standard Version).
First of all, the Hebrew word translated trust here is batach, which means to be confident, bold, or secure based on something or someone. Therefore, to trust in God means being confident that God is who He says He is and will do what He said He will do. As a result, you turn to Him instead of away from Him in every situation.
In other words, if God said He will do it, He will do it. As Numbers 23:19 says, “God is not a man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind.” Trust means that you accept the reliability of God in taking care of you.
Trust means believing God Within Every Fiber of Your Being
As Proverbs 3:5 says, you’re to trust God “with all your heart .” The heart goes beyond a physical organ. The Hebrew word for heart here is leb, which means a person’s inner man. It’s the core of your being. It’s your emotions, will, and desires.
Basically, your heart drives you. It’s your inner control center. Therefore, to trust God with your whole heart is to turn over all that you are to God.
Trusting God is a choice you make. Moment to moment, you choose to put your confidence in God because you know you can trust Him.
How do you know He can be trusted? That takes faith. Trusting God is grounded in faith. Hebrews 11:1 says that “Faith is the assurance of things we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see.” By building up your faith in God, you strengthen your trust in God.
Another aspect of trusting God with all your heart is that you trust in God alone. Only God can save you. As Acts 4:12 says, “salvation exists in no one else.
”Whatever you’re going through, God can and will see you through it. Moreover, God wants to do it. Psalm 46:1 promises you that God is your “refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble.
”If you trust Him in faith, He will work on your behalf. This reveals His power and His nature. In turn, God’s works inspire even more faith. Thus, it becomes a cycle
.Believe in God’s ability to bring you through your difficulty, God does it, then you believe in Him even more. Over and over again
.If you don’t believe me, read the Bible. The Bible contains testimony after testimony of God’s faithfulness in helping His people through life threatening situations. Since “God shows no partiality” ( Acts 10:34 ESV), if He did it for others, He will do it for you if you trust in Him.
Proverbs 3:6 continues this thought of trusting in God alone when it says “lean not on your own understanding.” You can’t try to work out the situation on your own. I’ve found that typically makes things worse
.Ultimately, trusting God with all your heart means that you give up control of your life to God. You accept that He has a plan for your life and will guide you. Since He loves you, He isn’t going to steer you wrong.
As I’ve heard others say, “Let go and let God.”
That’s why you have to trust God with “all your heart.” All means everything. There are no exceptions.
You have to trust Him in good times and bad. You can’t pick and choose. You have to trust Him in every circumstance and with every choice.
God isn’t some heavenly wish granter. He’s the creator and ruler of the universe. As such, God has designed everything for a purpose.
Because God’s very nature is love (1 John 4:8), He’s not going to hurt you. That’s hard to accept from a human perspective because people fail you. They let you down.
You have to remember that God isn’t a human. He promised “he will never leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6), and God always keeps His word.
What does it mean to trust in God?
It means to trust Him to take care of you in every situation according to His plan for your life. Plus, He will act on your behalf because of HIs love for you if you trust Him. In return, you are to trust Him in everything through faith.
Why should you trust God?
Again, the Bible tells us why when it says that “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him.” Trusting God brings blessings into your life.
These blessings include:
God will deliver you from your adversity- “In you, our fathers have trusted; they trusted, and You delivered them.’ (Psalm 22:4)
God will not disappoint you- “They cried out to you and were set free; they trusted in you and were not disappointed.” (Psalm 22:5)
God will help you- “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him and I am helped.” (Psalm 28:7)
God will not forsake you- “Those who know your name trust in You, for You, O Lord, have not forsaken those that seek You.” (Psalm 9:10)
God displays His loving devotion to you- “May your loving devotion rest on us, O Lord, as we put our hope in you” (Psalm 33:22)
God gives you reasons to rejoice- “Our hearts rejoice in Him, since we trust in HIs Holy name.” (Psalm 33:21)
God will act- “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will do it” (Psalm 37:5)
As you can see, God has provided many reasons to trust Him. His Word is full of the benefits of trusting in God. Plus, the Bible records how God has moved in the lives of others as they trusted Him.
Furthermore, God will prove Himself trustworthy to you if you allow Him the opportunity. It begins with faith. To trust God, you have to start with believing in Him.
Then, you have to commit yourself to a relationship with God. Growing closer to God strengthens your trust.
Because of this relationship, you trust Him in every situation.
Therefore, it all starts with God proving Himself worthy of your trust, and you stepping out in faith to trust Him
Whatever you’re going through, God knows. Plus, He knows how to deliver you through it, if you let Him
